Appliances are not general waste
Fridges, freezers, washing machines and anything else with a plug fall under the WEEE rules, and fridges and freezers additionally have to have their refrigerant gas removed at a permitted facility before the shell is processed. That is why they come off the van separately and go to a different part of the site.
It is worth knowing because it is one of the clearest ways to tell how an operator works. A fridge that disappears into the back of an unmarked van with a load of timber is a fridge that is not being degassed.
Scrap metal, and the rest of it
Garages are usually the metal end of a clearance: old radiators, bed frames, a barbecue, fencing, tools, and the frame of something that was going to be repaired. All of that goes, and metal is sorted out for recycling rather than landfilled.
The other half is the awkward-but-ordinary: paint-stiff brushes, dried-out timber, boxes that turned out to have been rained on, garden chemicals that need to go somewhere else, and a surprising number of tyres.
Access is most of the price
More than with any other clearance, a garage job is priced on how the stuff gets from where it is to where the van can park. A detached garage on a shared rear access is a different afternoon from an integral garage with the door onto a drive. One photo of the approach alongside one of the contents is usually enough.

These need a differently permitted carrier. Norfolk and Suffolk county household waste recycling centres accept most of them from householders free of charge, and your council's website lists the nearest one.
Frequently asked questions
Can you take fridges and freezers?
Yes. They are handled separately from general waste because the refrigerant gas has to be extracted by a permitted facility before the unit is broken up — that is a legal requirement, not an upsell. It is also why a fridge cannot simply go in with the rest of a load anywhere else either.
What about old engine oil and paint?
Those we cannot take, and garages are where they always turn up. Oils, fuel, brake fluid, paint and solvents all need a differently permitted carrier, and household quantities are accepted at the county recycling centres free of charge.
Do you take tyres?
Tyres are handled under separate rules from general waste, so mention them in your message and include them in the photo. It is better to know before the van is loaded than to leave four of them on your drive.
The garage door does not open any more.
Not unusual on an up-and-over that has not moved in years. If the only way in is through a side door or the house, say so — it changes the carry, so it changes the quote, and it is better dealt with in the message than on the day.
