The Waveney valley is the home patch

Harleston sits on the Norfolk side of the Waveney and the Suffolk border is immediately across it, so north Suffolk is not an outlying area for this business — it is the other half of the same run. Eye, Bungay, Halesworth, Stradbroke, Fressingfield and the villages along the valley are all within an ordinary morning.

Further south — Stowmarket, Framlingham and Ipswich — is inside the forty-mile patch, though it is better suited to a full load than to a single item, simply because of the drive.

Mattresses, and why they keep coming up

The single most common thing we are called for in Suffolk is a mattress, and the reason is structural rather than local. A mattress will not go in a car, will not be taken in a household collection, and at most recycling centres counts as a separate chargeable item. So it sits in a spare room or against the side of the house for months.

They are bulky rather than heavy, which means one or two will go on a part load rather than needing a trip of their own.

Rural Suffolk, same as rural Norfolk

Stables, barns and paddocks make up a good share of the work on this side of the river too — the pallet crate of sodden horse rugs in the photographs on this site was a Suffolk yard. Farm access suits a tipper better than it suits a skip lorry, and nothing has to be left standing on site between dropping and collecting.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of Suffolk do you cover?

The north of the county worked out from the Norfolk border — Eye, Bungay, Halesworth, Stradbroke, Beccles and the villages around them — and south within about forty miles to Stowmarket, Framlingham and Ipswich.

Do you cross between the counties on one job?

Constantly. The base is a mile or two from the border and the Waveney separates the two counties along most of this stretch, so a normal day is on both sides of it. It makes no difference to the price.

Can you take a mattress from a Suffolk property?

Yes. Mattresses are one of the most common single items we are called for, because councils will not take them in a normal collection and they will not fit in a car. They are bulky rather than heavy, so one or two go easily in a part load.
